American author, born in Lachine, Quebec, Canada, but mainly raised in Chicago, where his family moved in 1924. Saul Bellow grew up as the youngest child in a Russian-Jewish family who had left St. Petersburg in 1913. His father was a businessman. Bellow got his education at Tuley High School and the University of Chicago before moving to Northwestern University, where he obtained a degree in 1937 (anthropology and sociology). He later worked with various American universities - from 1962 to 1993 as a professor of Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He was married no less than five times and had several children in his earlier marriages. At the beginning of 2000, the then 84 years old Saul Bellow became a father again, when he had a daughter with his 44 years younger fifth wife.
