Fredric William Brown was an American author of mainly mystery and science fiction. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and led a trouble-free existence until his parents fell ill. His mother died in 1920, his father the following year and Brown was sent to stay with friends of the family until 1922 when he graduated from high school. He then did odd jobs and made several attempts at continuing his studies: he attended Hanover College, Indiana, for one semester in 1927 and he dropped out of the University of Cincinnati after only a few months in 1928.
