John Bude is a pseudonym for the English author, theatre enthusiast and teacher Ernest Elmore, born in Maidstone, Kent. He was taught at Mill Hill School, and in 1919 started at a secretarial college in Cheltenham. Evidently, he didn’t take any exams; instead he got a job as a sports teacher at St. Christopher School in Letchworth. There he also took part in the school’s dramatic activities and became so interested in the subject that he joined a touring theatre company as stage manager. While the plays were performed, he used to sit in the dressing room and work on his writing.
