Constantine P. Cavafy (Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis) was born in Alexandria to Greek-Orthodox parents. His father was a wealthy importer-exporter who had resided and worked in England and had become a naturalised British subject. When he died in 1870, the family lived in Liverpool for a few years, but they were forced to move back to Alexandria during the depression of 1876, and Cavafy was educated at a mercantile school there.
