Almudena Grandes Hernández was a Spanish author born in Madrid. After studies in geography and history she worked for a publisher writing encyclopaedia articles. In 1982, she starred in the film A contratiempo directed by Óscar Ladoire. She wrote regularly for the Spanish daily El País and appeared on the radio channel Cadena SER. Almudena Grandes was married to the poet Luis García Montero, who teaches at university in his hometown of Granada. The couple shared their time between Madrid and Granada. Grandes also often visited the Andalusian town of Rota on the coast of Cádiz, a town which was importent for her.
