Swedish author and journalist, born in Södertälje and raised in Saltsjöbaden just outside Stockholm. Jan Guillou, who is of French descent - his grandfather was the ambassador of France in Helsinki -, quit his law studies in order to try to make his way as a journalist instead and early on won a reputation for his engaged and politically radical reportages. Guillou has never made any secret of belonging to the political left. He was among the initiators of the founding of FIB/Kulturfront in 1971 and was later one of the persons behind this magazine’s exposure of the so-called IB affair (IB-affären) in 1973. Until then, IB had been a secret Swedish intelligence organization. The exposure led to prosecution and Guillou was sentenced to ten-month imprisonment for espionage.
