Wolf Haas is an Austrian linguist and advertising copywriter who has emerged over the past years as one of the most promising and prize-winning authors writing in German. Several of his books have been adapted for the screen and translated into several languages. He grew up in Maria Alm am Steinernen Meer near Salzburg. Both his parents worked in the restaurant trade. He attended the Borromäum boarding school in Salzburg, and in 1979, he enrolled at the University of Salzburg where he first read psychology and later linguistics and German, graduating in 1987 with a dissertation on the linguistics of concrete poetry. It was published in Germany in 1990.
