The Norwegian writer Edvard Hoem was born in Fræna, Romsdal, but he grew up on a small farm on the west coast of Norway. His father was an itinerant preacher, and Hoem draws greatly on this background in his books. In the 1970s, he was a member of the Norwegian Workers' Communist party, AKP (m-l), but he distanced himself from their political programme in the eighties. Hoem has worked as a dramaturge at Det Norske Teatret in Oslo and was appointed head of Teatret Vårt in Molde in 1997.
