Alan James Hollinghurst is a British author who was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and grew up in Faringdon, Berkshire, and Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Alan is the only child of James Hollinghurst, a bank manager, and his wife Elizabeth. Alan attended Canford Public School in Dorset and later read English at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he has also taught. He wrote his thesis on the three gay writers E.M. Forster, Ronald Firbank and L.P. Hartley.
