Ulla Isaksson was born in Stockholm as Ulla Margareta Lundberg in a family of comfortable means. She attended a secondary school for girls and read humanities in the equivalent of upper-secondary school. Her grandparents on her mother's side were members of the Mission Covenant Church, and she was active in the organisation until she was in her thirties. As a young woman she was interested in art, and before she began to write she was contemplating a career in the arts. Art remained a major influence on her work throughout her life. In 1938, she married her childhood friend David Isaksson; they had two sons together. After their divorce a few years later Isaksson married the literature professor and critic Erik Hjalmar Linder.
