Deon Meyer is something of a rarity in that he is a South African crime writer who has had his crime novels, written in Afrikaans, translated for the international market. He was born in Paarl in the Cape Province and grew up in Klerksdorp, in north-western South Africa where his father worked in a gold mine. Deon Meyer matriculated in 1976 at Schoonspruit High School in Klerksdorp. He gained a B.A. in English and History after studying at Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. He also has an M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of the Free State. During his military service in the South African army, Meyer was occupied with entertaining the troops – singing, dancing and acting.
