Cilla Naumann was born in Stockholm. During a period of her life she lived with her family in South-East Scania, but she later returned to settle in Stockholm. Her writing career took off while she was working as a journalist at the tabloid Expressen and later as a reporter at the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, where she coordinated reports about the assassination of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986. She cites wanting to dig deeper into the issues and personalities she encountered as a reporter as one of the reasons she began to write fiction. She took time off work and enrolled at a scriptwriting course, which resulted in her first published novel. An active feminist, she is one of the promoters of the Stockholm feminist festival, which takes place in conjunction with International Women’s Day. She continues to work as a journalist.
