The American author, playwright and magazine editor Fulton Oursler was born in Baltimore in a poor middle-class family. He left school at 15 and started to work as an office boy. In 1910 he got a job as a reporter on the Baltimore News American, and in the same year, aged 17, he married Rose Keller Karger. The couple had two children, of whom their son William ‘Will’ Oursler (1913–1985) became a well-known writer, editor and radio profile.
