Thanks to the Athenian politician and poet Solon we know that the lyrical poet Sappho from the island of Lesbos was both famous and admired in her lifetime. Plato called her "the tenth muse" and Aristotle respected and appreciated her despite the fact that "she was a woman". Today, Sappho remains one of the most important representatives of the Western poetry canon, her popularity never ceases and her poetry is continuously interpreted, imitated and debated.
