Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka (Wole Soyinka) was born in Abeokuta, West Nigeria, during British colonial rule. His father was headmaster of St.Peter's Primary Shool; his mother owned a shop and was well respected in the town for her commitment to the women's movement.
