Annika Thor grew up in Gothenburg in the 1950s and 60s. She learned to read and write when she was five years old, and she was a frequent visitor to the local library. Thor later moved with her family to a large apartment in central Gothenburg where she later set part of her first novel, A Faraway Island (En ö i havet). Her Russian father owned a clothes store where Annika Thor often worked during summer holidays. Her mother was a German Jew who had left Germany as early as in 1933, unlike many other family members who remained and met a crueler fate. Despite her secure upbringing, Thor experienced a permanent sense of dread connected to what had happened to her relatives, people who only existed as pictures in a photo album, and she feared that it could all happen again.
