Russian author, born at the estate of Yasnaya Polyana in Tula Province. Leo (Lev Nikolayevich) Tolstoy descended from an old Russian family of high nobility. The grandfather had made a reputation for an extravagant lifestyle and for dissipating both his own and his wife’s fortune. His father managed to get himself out of the difficult economic situation by marrying a rich heiress, Maria Volkonskaya.
