Swedish poet, born and raised on Söder in Stockholm. Tomas Tranströmer grew up with his mother, who was a teacher. His father, an editor, left the home when Tomas was small, but they still maintained certain contact throughout the years. After schooling at Katarina Norra and Södra Latin, Tomas Tranströmer decided to study psychology. Having obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956, he was employed at the Psychotechnical Institute at Stockholm University in 1957-60. Besides his authorship, Tranströmer has always been employed as a psychologist. For a long time he worked at the Labor Market Institute in Sweden, but after 35 years in Västerås he and his wife Monica – who married at the end of the 50’s - decided to return to Söder in Stockholm. Summertime is spent at Runmarö Island.
