Manly Wade Wellman is one of the better-known names in the world of American thrillers. He mainly wrote horror stories, science fiction and fantasy, but also crime and historical novels, books for young adults, biographies and non-fiction works about, for example, the American Civil War. He often combined elements from different literary genres, and his two most famous protagonists, Silver John the Balladeer and John Thunstone, are categorised as ‘occult detectives’. The former has become something of a cult figure.
