Wolkers, Jan

The Dutch author and artist Jan Wolkers was born in Oegstgeest near Leiden as the third of eleven children. His father owned a grocer's store, but was not able to make enough money to support his family. Wolkers’ family was not only poor, but strictly Calvinist. He was forced to leave school and start working due to poor grades.
