Sherlock Holmes’ chronicler and permanent companion in the stories by A. Conan Doyle has given his name to a particular type of character in crime fiction: a detective’s right hand, conversational partner and admiring friend is called ‘a Watson figure’. In books by other authors, Dr Watson has solved cases by himself. The ‘H’ in his name (according to Sherlockian research) stands for Hamish, the Scottish for James.

But he is well aware of the city’s less savoury sides, and the memory of crimes he has investigated has meant that he chain-smokes and also drinks too much – which greatly upsets his Muslim wife Fatma. She is sent from Sicily to England to assist in the investigation of the murder of a child, and solves the case. Afterwards, she reluctantly stays in the country. She is dark-blond, beautiful and slim, and the unmarried mother of daughter Allie whose father is a bishop, we are told by Ariana Franklin (pseudonym for Diana Norman).

Delaware is a child psychologist in Los Angeles who is consulted by the LA police department. He is not satisfied with only the police investigations, and continues on his own in a series of novels by Jonathan Kellerman. Delaware is an intelligent, emotionally insecure person, which comes to the fore in his relationship with his girlfriend Robin Castagna.
