American author born Chloe Ardelia Wofford, one of four siblings in a working class family in Lorain, Ohio. During the Civil War the town was situated just across the Confederate border and it was a refuge for runaway slaves. When she was baptised into the Catholic faith at the age of twelve she was given the additional Christian name "Anthony". Toni is short for Anthony.
