Anne Tyler is an American author who was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up in North Carolina. Her father, Lloyd Parry Tyler, was a chemist and her mother, Phyllis Mahon Tyler, was a social worker. Anne Tyler and her three brothers grew up in a home full of books. She won a scholarship to Duke University, North Carolina, where she attended courses in creative writing. In 1961, she was awarded a degree in Russian Literature. She then worked as a librarian and biographer at Duke and Columbia universities in New York. Tyler married the Iranian child psychiatrist Taghi Mohammad Modarressi in 1963, and they had two daughters. Modarressi died in 1997. Tyler now lives just outside Baltimore, Maryland.
